Photos taken in 2016 in the Kachi Colony slums of Madanpur Khadar in South Delhi, India, show the devastating impact of human consumption and waste. In 2019 India banned the import of foreign garbage but the US, Europe, and Australia continue to dump waste in poor and developing countries, predominantly in South East Asia. The poorest residents of these nations are often forced to live in our garbage.

Photos taken in 2016 inside the home of child laborers in the Kachi Colony slums of Madanpur Khadar in South Delhi, India, show children beading fabric panels on a cement floor in the pitch dark for less than 60 cents a day per family. Their mother, no longer able to do the work herself after the strain it put on her eyesight, is forced to rely on her children now. Purchasing cheap products and supporting the “fast fashion” industry comes at an extreme cost from which consumers are grossly disconnected.

Photos of a crushed can floating along the shore of an otherwise pristine pebble beach. Marine litter harms ocean ecosystems, wildlife, and humans. Proper disposal of waste, responsible recycling and use of reusable containers when possible will improve the quantity of marine debris and toxins in our oceans. It’s quite easy to be a responsible inhabitant of planet Earth, by exercising consciousness around personal waste consumption and disposal.

The 1994 Rwandan genocide left an estimated 800,000- 1 million people dead in 100 days with a surviving population of 60-70% women left behind to rebuild a shattered country. Photos taken in 2015 at a women’s artisan co-op in Rwanda show basket weavers smiling, laughing, weaving together; sharing personal stories of horror, survival and forgiveness. They are all Rwandan now, best friends, putting the Tutsi vs. Hutu past behind them in order to rebuild, support one another and move forward. “We had to rebuild a country, Mo.
